During March we paid our last
respects to our great friend Chris Rowe. There was a large gathering from
across the Morgan World to say goodbye to Chris at Easthampstead Park
Crematorium. The Centre was well represented on this extremely sad
occasion. The car park was filled with Morgans paying their last respect.
Several Centre members accepted the kind invitation of Chris’ wife Corinne
and their children Denzil and Janna to return home for refreshments. We
celebrated Chris’ life and the significant contribution he had made to the
happiness of other people’s lives. One hymn we sang at Chris’ funeral was
entitled “One More Step Along The World I Go”, for me this summed up
Chris’ philosophy of life and was very moving for many of us. At this sad
time I would like Corinne, Denzil and Janna to know that our thoughts and
support are with you all. I like to think that the Centre is really an
extended family.
This year we are
celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of our Centre. We are planning to
turn June into a month long celebration. As it has been pointed out to me
June will be halfway through the gateway to the new millennium, hence an
appropriate time to mark our anniversary. So how are we going to
celebrate? The month will
start off with Pamela and Mike Aldrich’s 30th Anniversary
Dinner on 2nd June. The following weekend Sue and Geoff Giles
will be taking us to Lord Nuffield’s home and of course the month
culminates with the MSCC Autotest on 25th June.
Up until fairly recently we
had one weekend spare. However I am very pleased to be able to announce
that Jenny Gale has organised a visit to the Hollycombe Steam Collection
on 18th June. Everything is steam powered including a wondrous
fairground. Jenny has promised to take me on the steam driven horses
provided I don’t keep asking for sweets or ice cream - I can’t wait! We
also have a trip to a steam railway coming up organised by Terry Tedman.
In the Summer Tony Hempel will be organising a joint F.H. Douglass/Thames
Valley Centre Car Show. All these events will form part of our birthday
celebrations.
During March Richard Thorne kindly invited the Centre
to visit his facilities as our local Morgan agent to view the new Aero 8.
I would like to thank Richard very much for his kind invitation. He had a
very good turn out receiving several orders I understand. The Aero 8 is
the sort of car that must be seen in the flesh to fully appreciate its
potential. I wonder what the standing quarter mile time will be? Can it
beat a Ferrari F50? Only time will tell I suppose. In fact the latest
edition of TVCN has detailed pictures of this event – for subscriptions
details and the availability of this scoop please see below.
In recent weeks we have welcomed several new members
to the Centre. Nigel Morgan arrived on the third Thursday on the look out
for a Morgan to buy – preferably a four seater. Jenny and Tony Newberry
made a welcome return to the Centre while Alan & Olive Stephenson,
Jacqui and Mike Waller, Jim and Wyn Loveridge and Peter Ryman made their
first visits. We also welcomed Richard Thorne to our illustratious
Centre.
I am very pleased to be
able to announce that on Sunday 30th July Richard Thorne has
invited the Centre to his premises for a light hearted fun gymkhana and a
first class barbecue. Richard’s wife is a cordon bleu cook so the food
will be very special. The price charged will cover costs. Please contact
Richard to express your interest. It will be a fun day out. Richard has a
large field adjacent to his premises that should give us plenty of room to
play in. I would like to thank Richard and his wife for their kind
invitation.
