Well after months of painstaking research our pub committee have finally found
a replacement venue for the Queens Oak. They will of course now need a period
of rehabilitation! Ever since I lost my notepad at the Queens I haven’t felt
right about the place! The pub definitely lost our Morgan photographs that had
been up on the wall – very poor show in my book! The replacement pub is
called the Barley Mow and is located at The Hurst, Winchfield, near Hook. Our
web site will have detailed directions to the pub shortly. The Barley Mow has
a pub and restaurant; it also has a good sized car park. The venue is in a
pleasant area near to a rural part of the Basingstoke Canal. We will meet
there on the first Sunday lunchtime in the month from now on.
I would recommend getting there as early as you can. If you can let me
know if you want to eat in the restaurant then I will be pleased to book a
table, etc. Incidentally according to the committee the food, real ales,
lagers and wines are all very good! I hope to see you there.
We are very lucky this month
as our walk is to be organised by our very own Thames Valley Centre Newsletter
reporter Heidi Miller. Normally Heidi is rushing around the world somewhere
bringing back the truth behind our Morgan events, hence as a result I don’t
get to see as much of Heidi as I would like. However, this month Heidi will be
around to use her extensive local knowledge to show us around the lovely
Hughenden Valley leading to the exquisite Downley Common, all near High
Wycombe. I’m looking forward to it very much Heidi.
The ridges of the Hughenden valley to Downley Common
Sunday 28th
March 2004
The starting point of this
month’s walk is the car park of the Church of St Michael and All Angels,
Hughenden. The Church is next to Hughenden Manor. The walk is near to High
Wycombe and can be located on the OS sheet Landranger 165, at grid reference
865955, for Hughenden Church.
The walk is three miles in
length and circulates around Downley Common and the Hughenden valley.
We shall meet Heidi at the
Church of St Michael and All Angels at 10:30 am and we shall be back in time
for lunch at our normal local pub in the area, the Hampden Arms.
I hope to see you there.
