I am very pleased to be able to report that Barbara and David Harris won the Richard Thorne Charity Trophy for 2005 - the first winners in fact. At the Hampden Arms noggin Helen Thorne presented the trophy to Barbara and David along with a replica which they can keep. This trophy will be awarded each year for members in the Centre that have raised the most money for charity during our annual Charity raising event. The winners of the trophy are able to nominate the charity that the Centre will raise money for in the following year. Our charity event is a day of remembrance for lost love ones and friends that were connected with the Centre. To be out enjoying our Morgans as we used to with our lost love ones and friends is a wonderful way to remember them, bringing back many happy times together. For me personally, I feel that our charity event is the most important of the year. I would like to thank Helen and her team for the monies raised last year and the great event associated with the fund raising. We collected in the region of £1500 for Marie Curies Cancer Care; with monies still to come in, this is a fantastic achievement.
For next year Barbara and David have asked if we could raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust; this of course we will be pleased to do. To this end Brian Miller, Mike Smith and Andy Doughty along with their respective spouses, Ann, Gill and Lynne, have been working hard on a tremendous weekend charity event to be held in September. As soon as things have been finalised we shall launch the occasion. All I can say at the moment is that it will be a fantastic weekend for all. I would like to thank Brian, Ann, Mike, Gill, Andy and Lynne very much indeed. Some of you will know that Lynne has just rebuilt and covered my noggin signing book, circa 1986, courtesy of Pat Hadley. How she found the time with all the work she has been putting in I don’t know! Thank you Lynne, the book is now better than new! I wish I’d known Lynne when I was at school.
While on the subject of trophies, we also have the F.H Douglass Mileage Challenge Shield to compete for. The world is your oyster with this one. Tony Hempel has given me a little black book, thank you Tony, where I shall enter your current mileage, then at the end of the year I shall record your mileage again, the difference will represent distance travelled for the year. The farthest travelled Morgan will win the Shield. Tony will award the Shield at the Hampden Arms Christmas Lunch. The sooner you give me your mileage the better of course. Please contact me and I will put you in my little black book. This year we have trips to the Lakes, France, Cornwall, Ireland, and Arundel to name but a few. So there are plenty of opportunities to take your Morgan out for a spin. Tony wants to see you out there enjoying your Morgans. I hope you will take part, now where is my map of Peking?
Our plans for the Lakes are shaping up nicely. For example, Paul Avis and his wife are organising a trip to a chocolate factory for us on Easter Monday – how appropriate. So all you “morganeering” girls out there, you are most welcome to join us and a few chaps as well I suspect. How can we ever top a trip to a chocolate factory! If you would like to come to the Lakes with us please contact either Paul or me. It should be a very pleasant weekend.
Since our normal Hampden Arms noggin on the third Sunday in the month has this year fallen on Easter Sunday, we have decided to move this noggin to the fourth Sunday for this month only. In May we shall go back to the normal third Sunday. I hope this temporary change won’t inconvenience anyone.*
We have moved our Cornwall trip to a week in June. I hope I am not tempting fate here but the weather in June for Cornwall can be quite settled, also there will not be as many people on holiday as you find over bank holidays and during the school holidays. During peak times the population of Cornwall can increase three fold. So taking all these factors into account we have decided to make the change. Please contact Jane and Glenn Davies if you would like to go. They have some interesting outings planned. I’m particularly looking forward to the Minack Theatre visit to see the Wind in the Willows – Poop Poop!
Our cruise on the 24th June is filling up nicely. Please contact Captain Mike Aldrich and his first mate Bert Oslar if you would like to come aboard. It is the first time ever that we have as a Centre organised a cruise on the Thames, since we are Thames Valley Centre it is very appropriate don’t you think? It should be a great evening; I hope you can join us.
With the first bank holiday weekend in May now free we are organising a special walk in and around Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, in Dorset. You can join us for the day or come down for the weekend. See our events page for details.
Take care & see you all soon
