It seems our first Thursday noggin at the Bird In Hand tends to fall on significant historic events. In June it was the 80th Anniversary of D-Day and last month the General Election. I suspect everyone rushed home from the noggin to see the exit polls. What the future will bring, only time will tell.
June was a busy month, with the Pangbourne Classic Car Show, and our trip to The Museum of Water & Steam at Kew plus The Chesham Motor Show (Best of Italian vs Best of British); and The Yattendon Classic Vehicle Day. July was just as busy. Oddly for a motor club we had two aeronautical events. We joined SogMOG for a Fly-in at the West Tisted Air Display and we arranged a trip to the de Havilland Museum.
It was great to learn from a recent newsletter the news that Alan Clark and his son Howard are competing in the Morgan. Howard’s next outing is at the Bentley Drivers Club Race Meeting at Silverstone this month. I wish them both well. I know Steve will be advertising rounds of the challenge we can conveniently attend and give our support. Best wishes to you both - have a great season.
We have a busy few months coming with some visits to air-shows, race meetings, and many other events.
On Saturday August 10th, ThamesMOG will be joining with other centres at the Bentley Drivers Club Race Meeting at Silverstone. Hosting its 76th race meeting at Silverstone, the Bentley Drivers Club has long been a favourite on the calendar for vintage and classic-car racing enthusiasts. Boasting a 'summer garden-party' atmosphere and plenty of track action, this meeting will see Bentleys (some 100 years old!) take to the track around Silverstone. Supporting races on the packed programme will see plenty of action from classic marques such as two 20 minute Morgan Challenge races .The Bentley Drivers Club meeting is a very friendly affair. Families take picnics and sit in the sun or the grandstands to watch the racing, or wonder around the paddock to admire the vintage Bentleys; look at the many variety of race cars; and talk to the drivers. There is usually a large contingency of Morgans from the local Centres who park up at Corpse corner. You need to book your entry ticket (£17) in advance online.
We have made a provisional booking for 20-30 people in 10-15 cars at 10:00 on 25th August.
The group rate is £7/£6 Concessions and a group tour can be arranged. The Oxford Bus Museum has its origins in the Oxford Bus Preservation Syndicate, which was set up 57 years ago in 1967 by a group of bus enthusiasts. They had the foresight to see that buses and coaches of significance to previous generations should be saved and preserved for future generations to enjoy before they were lost for all time. Beginning with just one vehicle which can still be seen and ridden on today, the number of preserved and restored vehicles has grown, and the museum now contains around 40 vintages buses and coaches, including a number of unique vehicles, the earliest dating from 1913. Entrance includes the Morris Motor Museum and Historic Bicycle Collection so there is plenty to see.
ThamesMOG member Charles Southwood has invited us join him at the West London Aero Club annual charity Members Day on Saturday 31st August. It is an all-day classic car display, an air show, food, drinks, children’s train ride and various activities and stalls for family and children. The club house is also available with a bar and selection of food. It is free if you display your car, although they welcome donations. If you'd like to display your Morgan, can you please contact me, Steve Bridge, and I will give you the organiser's details.
